How Often Should I Have My Chimney Inspected?

We recommend all fireplaces, chimneys, and vents undergo professional inspections at least once a year. These routine appointments ensure there are no structural issues. It is crucial to contact us for an appraisal because a structural problem can be dangerous.

How Often Should I Have My Chimney Swept?

There is no specific answer to this question because so many factors influence when you should hire us for a sweep. For instance, how often you use the fireplace, whether there are animals nesting in the chimney, and other issues can impact when to have your chimney swept. The safest answer is once a year. We will evaluate your chimney during an inspection and can recommend sweeping if needed.

Do Gas Fireplaces Need Servicing?

Even though gas is a clean-burning fuel and doesn’t emit soot, nests and other clogs can still make operating the fireplace unsafe. We still recommend an inspection once a year to ensure there are no problems.

Why Does My Fireplace Have a Bad Odor?

Most of the time, fireplace odors happen due to creosote deposits. This is a natural occurrence during wood-burning operations. During high-humidity days, the smell will grow worse. Chimney sweeping will partially solve the problem, and commercial chimney deodorants can also help.

How Do I Light My Gas Fireplace?

Always ensure your chimney is free from obstructions before use. Yearly inspections will take care of that problem. Make sure you know where the emergency shut-off valve in case you need to turn the fireplace off immediately. Each system is different, but you can generally follow these simple steps to turn on your fireplace:

  1. Locate the pilot system. There should be knobs to control the flame and turn the system on and off. Turn it to the pilot position.
  2. Now, push the knob in. This will release gas into the pilot.
  3. Push the pilot button and hold while simultaneously pressing the igniter once every second. The pilot should light at this point. It might take a few tries during the first light of the season.
  4. Once the pilot lights, hold the pilot knob for 10 to 15 minutes. This will ensure it stays lit.
  5. Now you can release the pilot knob and turn it to the on position. Adjust the flame height to your preference.

How Do I Clean My Fireplace’s Glass Front?

The simplest – and most effective – method is to use damp newspaper dipped in leftover ashes. Wipe in a circular motion. As you do so, the soot will loosen enough for you to use a traditional glass cleaner to finish the job. There are also commercial cleaners available that can clean the glass without newspaper.

How Do I Start a Fire in a Wood Fireplace?

Ensure your chimney does not have any blockages before lighting your fireplace. We recommend a yearly chimney inspection to prevent any issues. Lighting your wood-burning fireplace is easy! Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the damper and prime the flue. When you open the damper, cold air will prevent the smoke from escaping correctly. Priming the flue solves this problem.
  2. Don’t remove all the ashes from your fireplace because an ash bed of one to two inches leads to hotter fires. You can take some from your grill if you don’t have any ashes.
  3. Place large logs on the bottom and smaller ones on top. Then add a layer of kindling and a layer of balled-up newspaper. Top with more tinder. Then light the fire from the top of the pile.
